His mother encouraged him to play a variety of instruments. He started with the piano at the age of 7 and was playing the electric guitar at 14. However, James was born into a family with a military tradition that passed from father to son, and he was no exception. After studying aerospace at the University of Bristol he joined the British army. He reached the rank of captain and participated in the UN’s peace mission in the former Yugoslavia. During his military career James was one of the coffin bearers for Princess Diana in 1997. During his time in Kosovo, whilst armed with his guitar he became more interested in music. He composed the song “no bravery” that relates his experience of war. In 2002 he left the army to devote himself fully to music. He gave his first concert at Water Rats in London. In 2003 he went to Los Angeles and met Linda Perry (group 4 Non Blondes). In 2004 he recorded his first album, Back to Bedlam. Comprising 10 tracks this album sold over 11 million copies worldwide. The single you’re beautiful was number one in many countries. James was the first British artist in nine years to reach number one in the US charts (since Elton John). In 2006 James was involved in the anti-war campaign (living with war today) that was founded by Neil Young, along with other artists such as Pink, Esther Galil.... Since the beginning of his career James has won many rewards for his talent around the world, although he himself says that he does nothing special - just that he sings as he likes to and that there are things more important on Earth, such as wars. End of 2009 the English press we learn with pleasure that James is the artist who sold more album of the decade with Back to Bedlam. Early in 2010 James is involved with many artists of the international registration of a single in aid for earthquake victims in Haiti, "Everybody Hurts" REM resumed. |
